Buenos Aires Travel Information

Buenos Aires, Recoleta, San Telmo & Downtown

  • Buenos Aires is one of Latin America´s favorite destination due to its rich cultural heritage, cosmopolitan lifestyle and European flavor. Good hotels in Buenos Aires are located mainly in the areas of Puerto Madero, Recoleta and Santa Fe Ave.
  • Recoleta, La Boca, San Telmo and Delta del Tigre are the main tourist areas. They are located in the Federal District and in the northern suburbs (see Buenos Aires map).
  • Ezeiza International Airport is Argentina´s main gateway, located some 20 miles south of Buenos Aires (40 minutes by car). Aeroparque is the domestic airport, located downtown. Schedule at least 1 hour to transfer if you must continue on a domestic flight upon arrival.
  • Buenos Aires Hotels are mostly located in the downtown area. Within walking distance you will find excellent cultural attractions, shopping malls, parks and cafes.
  • Security is good for Latin American standards, even at night. However, normal precautions should be taken on the streets. Taxis are a frequent target for robbery.

Buenos Aires Hotels, Apart Hotels & Apartments for Rental

  • Buenos Aires Hotels tend to be pricy and overrated for international standards. Apart hotels and business accommodations are located mainly in Recoleta and downtown (see Buenos Aires map).
  • Apart Hotels in Recoleta are the best alternative in terms of price, infrastructure & comfort (see prices for Buenos Aires)
  • Apartments for rental in Recoleta or Palermo are a popular choice for families and small groups of travelers.
  • A large number of hotels in Buenos Aires are located between 9 de Julio, Santa Fe and Cordoba Avenues, within walking distance to the shops of Florida St. and Galeria Pacífico.

Buenos Aires Tours, Tango Shows & Attractions

  • Tango shows are a must in Buenos Aires. Senor Tango, Bar Sur, El Viejo Almacen and several other places in San Telmo are excellent options.
  • Tango dancing is good at Club Gricel and Sin Rumbo. Foreigners usually learn tango dancing at Nuevo Salon La Argentina, La Viruta or small tango houses in San Telmo.
  • Most theatres and music shows are located on Corrientes Avenue, including Teatro Colon.
  • Florida street and Santa Fe Avenue are the favorite areas for shopping due to their proximity. Galerias Pacífico, Patio Bullrich, Alto Palermo and Paseo Alcorta are the most popular downtown malls
  • Recoleta, San Telmo and Retiro are accessible on foot and very suitable for walking, eating, shopping and sight seeing. Puerto Madero is a nice promenade along the river with many good restaurants (see Buenos Aires map)
  • Buenos Aires City tours usually include attractions located downtown. The famous Plaza de Mayo is sorrounded by the Pink House -the Presidential building-, the Cabildo -old town hall- and the “Municipalidad”-town council-.
  • The obelisk and the Colon Theatre are just a few blocks away right on Avenida 9 de Julio (see map of Buenos Aires). Avenida de Mayo is full of domes and old buildings, offering a beautiful ride into Argentina’s old days (see photos of Buenos Aires).
  • San Telmo ( a few blocks from Plaza de Mayo) and Caminito street in La Boca offer handicrafts and antiques market fairs, paintings and tango dancing on the street (see pictures).
  • Recoleta offers restaurants, exquisite shops, museums and Iglesia Del Pilar. There is a flea market on weekends, along with music and street art shows. Many people visit the cemetery since a lot of famous people (Evita among them) are buried there. Some of the best Buenos Aires hotels are also situated in this area
  • Tigre is a suburb of Buenos Aires. Its main attractions are the fruit market -with handcrafts and regional food-, and a sidewalk along the river with open spaces and restaurants. Parque de la Costa - the largest amusement park in Argentina - is also located in Tigre.

Buenos Aires Car Rental, Airport Transfer & Transportation

  • Car rental in Buenos Aires is offered both by international and local operators. Prices are similar but locals tend to be more flexible with mileage. Renting a car in Buenos Aires is not worth if you plan to drive around the city because the public transportation system is safe, cheap and reliable.
  • Airport Transfers, taxis and shuttle services are commonly used to get downtown from any of the two airports. They are reliable and safe, provided that the services are contracted with established providers
  • Buenos Aires subway system is the best option to go around the city (see Buenos Aires map). It reaches most tourist attractions and it costs about USD 0.30 each way. The public bus system runs all over the city and it is mostly safe during the day. The cost of a bus ride is similar to the subway.
  • San Isidro and Tigre - some 45 minutes north from Buenos Aires - can be reached by Tren de la Costa or Linea Mitre. Board the Linea Mitre train (Tigre line) at Retiro Station and commute at Olivos
  • Bus transportation is comfortable, cheap and safe. Buses connect the Retiro Station to almost every city in the country. Buses are a good alternative to flying for distances under 400 miles

    Tourist Information on Buenos Aires

  • The best time to visit Buenos Aires is from September to December and from March to May. Winter is cold and rainy and summers are hot and humid
  • Buenos Aires, like other Latin American cities, has homeless people begging on the streets, and public parks. It is a good idea to carry pocket change (coins)
  • Even though security is better than other Latin American cities, robberies have increased over the past few years. Reasonable precautions should be taken, specially in areas outside downtown, including La Boca and San Telmo and the financial district. Calling for a taxi over the phone is also recommended since robberies involving tourists often take place in taxis.
  • The Board of Tourism offers information about accommodations and Buenos Aires hotels on Santa Fe Ave and Suipacha street. Additional information cabins can be found on Florida street, Puerto Madero (derrick) and main airports
  • Buenos Aires hotels are often sold out between November and January, so we advice you to book well ahead on those dates.
