Buzios Travel Information

Buzios , Joao Fernandez, Armacao & the Beaches

  • Buzios is an 8 km long volcanic peninsula where hills (morros) plunge into the sea forming cliffs, caves and small beaches.
  • The area of Buzios includes several islands and dozens of beaches, among them Armação de Buzios, Geriba, Joao Fernandes, Ferradura, Tartaruga and Azeda (see Buzios map). Small rocky islands are quite attractive to practice scuba diving or snorkeling.
  • Buzios has a stable population of 10,000 but from mid-December to March this number doubles with visitors from Argentina, Europe and Rio de Janeiro
  • The downtown area is called Armacao de Buzios. Its beaches are not recommended for swimming due to pollution. Secluded small beaches, although without infrastructure, are a good alternative (see Buzios map). Some of the favorites are Joao Fernandes, Azeda, Azedinha and Brava (great for surfing).
  • Water temperature is cold due to an oceanic stream that flows into the area. The west side is more protected, with warmer still waters.
  • Buzios downtown area lies along the coastline, with pedestrian cobbled streets and a great number of small shops, restaurants and bars. Rua das Pedras –main street- has the largest number of discos, restaurants and shops (see Buzios pictures)

    Buzios Hotels, Inns & Lodges

  • Buzios hotels are scattered around the peninsula. Accommodations include over 200 small inns (pousadas), lodges and hotels.
  • Buzios Hotels and inns can be pricy and overrated for international standards although some of them have excellent levels of comfort and services. As a rule, hotels have few rooms and are attended by their owners.
  • When booking Buzios hotels keep in mind location: the downtown area has great night life but poor beaches. Outside beaches are nice and secluded but have no night life, no supermarkets and no restaurants (see customer reviews)
  • Hotels are often situated on top of hills. Therefore daily access to the beach can be very demanding even for those who are physically fit.

Buzios Tours, Scuba Diving & Activities

  • Buzios tours are mostly related to water activities and boat trips around the peninsula.
  • The best places to practice snorkeling or scuba diving in Buzios are: Lagoinha, Tartaruga, the eastern part of Punta de Crominoso and Punta de Boca de Barra.
  • The most exquisite place for scuba diving is the island of Ancora, 40 minutes by boat from Buzios. Here there are turtles, lobsters, rays and “morenas”.
  • Scuba diving services and equipment can be hired in downtown Buzios, where courses are offered as well.

Buzios Car Rental, Airport Transfer & Transportation

  • Buzios car rental is restricted to typical buggies to drive around the beaches and compact cars to visit the region.
  • Public buses depart from downtown Buzios and reach most of the beaches. There are also aquatic taxis providing transportation from Canto to Ossos, Azeda and Joao Fernandes.
  • Rio de Janeiro, located 170 km from Buzios, is the closest airport with regular frequencies. Airport transfers from Rio de Janeiro can be hired in regular or private service and take about 3 hours.
  • There are flights from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to Cabo Frio during the high season. This airport is located 36 km from Buzios.

    Tourist Information on Buzios

  • Tourist Information on Buzios can be obtained at the Tourist Office located at the access gate. In there you will find updated listings of Buzios hotels, restaurants , discos and tour operators. Beware of "travel assistants" which offer lodging and tours on the streets.
  • Prices in Buzios are higher than in most Brazilian destinations, especially during the high season.
  • There are good options of fast food and snacks in downtown Buzios.
