Description
It is located 55 Km. away from the Cancún Airport to the south, in the middle of the way to Tulum. The trip is approximately one hour long.
In mayan language, Xcaret means “Small Creek”. The mayans believed that their waters could purify the body and soul. Since then, they used to take ritual baths that prepared them for navigation to the near island of Cozumel, where they used to go to adore Ixchel, the fertility goddess.
Nowadays, it counts on several attractions; the most popular one is the wonderful crystalline water creek with multicolor fishes; white sand beaches; the encounter with mayan history when exploring the vestiges of this great culture.
At the museum, 26 scale models of the most important mayan establishments are exhibited, and there are crafts stores, snack bar, lockers and bathrooms.
Among other attractions, the ones that stand out are the 530 mts. long underground river of crystalline waters and the Pueblo Maya River, which is 500 mts. long; a wild birds breeding place with 36 different typical species from this zone; the mayan town, the “mariposario” (place with different types of butterflies); the aquarium; the “tortugario” (place with different types of turtles); the orchids and mushrooms farm; a botanical garden; and the tigers and pumas island. At dusk, the celebration in Xcaret begins at night, with an equestrian show, the pre-Hispanic game of ball, rituals at the millenarian caverns and the exotic Mayan town, until arriving at the amphitheatre where a great number of multicolor suits and typical dances of each state of the Mexican Republic awaits; this show is interpreted by the Mexican National Ballet.
