Meulen Inn
This place was the highlight of our stay in El Calafate. We got a little nervous as we were on our way to get dropped off since it seemed to be a ways from downtown. We were wrong - the setting was ideal, overlooking the beautiful Lago Argentino. It's about a 5 minute drive from downtown, about a twenty minute walk. The hotel runs two trips to town and two back each day, which was plenty. The downtown area is really touristy and we found that our location was ideal - our room overlooked the lake. The 2 stars for infrastructure are the result of the shuttle being prevented from leaving because of a sand dune being blown over the road. It wasn't a problem since the hotel ordered (and paid for) a taxi for us to downtown. The real highlight was the family that runs this place and their staff. We ended up having Christmas dinner with a few other guests and the family, and it was far and away the best meal we had in El Calafate. That was the only night we ate dinner at their restaurant, and that's probably the only thing we regret - in hindsight we should have eaten there again. That night was our favorite experience of our whole trip. Warm, welcoming and helpful don't even adequately describe the place. We mentioned several times how the place feels like a large B&B. The breakfast was as good as we've had in Argentina. I haven't even said that our room was huge, the bathroom was extremely nice and clean, and that our room had amazing views of the lake. I would highly recommend staying here if you don't mind being slightly removed from the touristy downtown (our excursions picked us up from the hotel anyways). Spending Christmas at this place was seriously the highlight of our trip to Argentina.
