Description The tour includes Puerto Pirámide, Punta Delgada & Caleta Valdés
Puerto Pirámide: is a small town located on gulf Nuevo. Its beaches were adopted as a reproduction site by right whales. They come every year in May and leave in December. There are also sea lion and sea elephant colonies within the area
Punta Delgada: is an old lighthouse turned into hotel and marine reserve. Many sea lion and sea elephants come every year to its shores, but access to the reserve is restricted to Hotel guests. Its restaurant is one of the few choices available in Peninsula Valdes.
Caleta Valdés: is a 35 kmts (20 miles) strip of ocean full of marine life: birds, penguins, lions, elephants and orcas share the ecosystem here.
The reserve has several viewpoints located along the cliffs overlooking the ocean, a restaurant and a small lodge.
How can you get there? you can watch the right whales in Puerto Pirámides, 97 kilometers from Puerto Madryn. Take Ruta Provincial 1and turn right into Ruta Provincial 2.
Ticket Península Valdés Reservations: U$ 15 per person
The first whales arrive in April to the Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José to mate, and by June or July there are hundred of them. The boats leave from Puerto Pirámides and stop close to the shore to see the spectacular play. The Southern right whale is very curious and soft. It is breathtaking to see them come close and often go below the boat (they never touch it). They also flip in the air and blow water so chances are that you will get wet. Watching the whales will change the way you see nature, so bring your children along.
Although it is traditional to go to Península Valdés during the Colombus day holiday, we advise you to come at some other time, because of the great number of tourists, long lines and crowded boats. Boat trips started here in 1971 and, in the beginning, they were only in October and November. The number of whales was much lower than today and also they were more scattered. Today you can see them in calm waters, such as Golfo Nuevo, Golfo San José, El Doradillo and Puerto Pirámides.
Once the boat reaches the deeper sea, the captain stops the engine, and waits until they get closer. It is forbidden to chase them, bother them or touch them, which is tempting because many times they raise their heads very closely. Some whales like to swim under the boat, but do not worry: they have absolute control of space. The most sublime moment is when the whale flips out of the water and plunge back into the sea with their thirty tons, making a huge splash. To complete this spectacular view, they sometimes blow water through the two blowholes located in the head (spiracles), and you can see a V-shaped cloud of water. Others lift their tail high out of the water or hit their flukes down into the surface.
When you reach the shore, you will not believe the wonderful feelings that will always be with you. Do not miss this opportunity to be face to face with nature !
