The Christ of Corcovado

The Christ of Corcovado is Rio´s, best-known icon and tourist landmark due to its worldwide popularity. It´s a concrete statue of 30 meters whose wide open arms seem to embrace the whole city. It was built by Hector Da Silva Costa with Paul Landowsky's assistance.

The base stands on the top of the Corcovado hill (710 meters) offering a magnificent view of Rio: the Guanabara bay, Niteroi, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon, the botanical garden, the Jockey Club and the Tijuca National Park, Further north, Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo and the famous Sugar Loaf.
On the platform there are souvenir stores, an information office, toilets, bars and small shops with fast food and light meals at reasonable prices. You may visit it from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Admission, either on foot or by car, is $8 per person.

If you are planning to stay in Río´s, for a day or do not have much spare time, we suggest visiting either the Corcovado or the Sugar Loaf. Which one is better? . They are both excellent options, but the Sugar Loaf offers more observation decks and open spaces, allowing tourists to spend a peaceful and enjoyable day. The Corcovado receives crowds of tourists all year round, making it hard to find a quiet place to rest or take pictures. In both cases, it is better to get there in the early morning to avoid the crowds, the intense heat and the air pollution which covers the view later during the day.

How do you get there?

Access by car is along Rua Cosme Velho or through the Puerta de los Macacos, near the Botanical Gardens. During the car ride it is good to take a few minutes and enjoy the views from the Chinese, the Emperor and the Doña Marta observation decks. Another good option is to take public buses that reach Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo or Flamengo. And finally, there's a tour bus called Turistic City Rio -orange line- which has a stop at the main gate. From the main gate, you can get to the top either by train or car. Access by train is very picturesque and takes about 15 minutes across the Atlantic forest, making the ride cooler during the intense summer heat.
