Salta and Jujuy

  • Salta and Jujuy are located in the northwest of Argentina, in a mountain region with breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage (see map). This region is also a part of the Puna, a big plateau 3,800 meters above sea level.
  • Salta is known as "la linda" (the pretty one) due to its colonial architecture and restored old buildings (see pictures) . It is located on a fertile valley, some 1,500 km from Buenos Aires and 120 km from Jujuy.
  • Jujuy is located 120 km from Salta and 1.643 km from Buenos Aires. The city is surrounded by mountains and rivers. Jujuy is the closest point to Quebrada de Humahuaca, Tilcara and many other tourist attractions although many of the tours depart from Salta.
  • Jujuy is less urbanized than Salta and maintains intact its colonial past and native culture. Its ancestral traditions can be seen on the streets and public buildings (see pictures).
  • Salta and Jujuy maintain a large percentage of native population - mainly Inca and Aymará. They keep a 300-year-old basic lifestyle in communion with the environment.
  • Salta, Jujuy and several towns in the area hold religious festivities with big parades and typical celebrations. Locals descend from the mountains wearing typical costumes and playing music with native instruments (see customer reviews).

    Jujuy and Salta Hotels

  • Jujuy and Salta hotels are limited to 3 and 4 star accommodations. However there are many guest houses and inns with good services and moderate prices. They are mostly located in Salta, Jujuy, Purmamarca, Humahuaca, Tilcara, Cafayate and their neighboring areas.
  • Salta hotels have increased significantly in the last years and today the city concentrates most of the offering in northwest Argentina.
  • Jujuy hotels are located in the downtown area, but the offering is very limited in terms of category and quantity.
  • Hostels are a good alternative for budget travelers because they offer colonial-style buildings, affordable prices and personal service. They are located in rural areas as well as downtown.
  • Termas de Reyes Hotel is one of the best Spa in the region. It is located 19 km from Jujuy in a secluded natural area.

    Jujuy and Salta Tours

  • Jujuy and Salta tours are oriented to visiting old buildings and museums, participating in traditional festivities, tasting typical food and specially enjoying their pictures landscapes of mountains, valleys and canyons.
  • All tours depart from Salta or Jujuy since the routes cover both provinces.
  • Salta tours and attractions include the San Francisco Church, the Cabildo, the San Bernardo Convent, the Basilica Cathedral, the Candelaria Church, and San Lorenzo (see packages).
  • The San Martin Park is a beautifully wooded area by Mt. San Bernardo. There is a cable railway connecting the base and the peak, where visitors can enjoy magnificent views of the city and the Lerma Valley. You can also go up the mountain by car or on foot.
  • Cachi is another interesting tour. It is a picturesque colonial town located 157 km from Salta, in Los Cardones National Park. The winding road crosses rivers and canyons and reaches Cuesta del Obispo. In the Enchanted Valley, you will see how wind erosion and rain have carved out shapes in natural colors. There is a small lagoon and paintings inside the caves.
  • The Cafayate tour reaches Quebrada de Las Conchas, where there are multiple shapes carved out by erosion. The city of Cafayate has colonial and baroque style houses and is surrounded by rivers and vineyards. Here you can buy silver crafts and taste torrontés, a local variety of wine grape.
  • Tren a las Nubes is a 217 km long railroad across the Andes. It departs from Salta, crosses the Lerma Valley and Quebrada del Toro and arrives to the Puna, with impressive views along the way. Its final destination is La Polvorilla, at 4,220 meters above sea level. Movi Track serves the same route in AWD trucks.
  • Jujuy tours to Quebrada de Humahuaca include visiting several towns such as Purmamarca, Maimará, Tilcara and Humahuaca. The road follows the Río Grande, framed by multicolor mountains where you will revive the pre-Hispanic past in cave paintings and community celebrations such as Pachamama and Carnival.
  • Puna tours include the towns of Abra Pampa, Rinconada, La Quiaca, Susques, Casira and Yavi. In this deserted area, you will find the Pozuelos Lagoon, a real oasis populated by magnificent birds

    Jujuy and Salta Car Rental and Airport Transfers

  • Jujuy and Salta car rental companies are located in the downtown areas.
  • Salta offers air access through the International Airport General Martín Miguel de Güemes, "El Aybal", located 9 km from the city. There are connecting flights from Salta to Córdoba, Tucumán, Jujuy and Santa Cruz in Bolivia. From this airport, you can take taxis or transfers to Salta and Jujuy.
  • Jujuy also has domestic flights in the International Airport Gobernador Horacio Guzmán, located 34 km from the city.
  • Salta and Jujuy offer daily bus services to different cities of Argentina such as Córdoba, Tucumán and Buenos Aires, as well as selected destinations of Bolivia and Chile.

    Tourist Information in Salta and Jujuy

  • Salta tourist information center is located downtown on Buenos Aires street. Jujuy tourist information center is located on Gorriti and Belgrano streets.
  • In Buenos Aires, Jujuy has a tourist office located on Santa Fe Avenue, in Retiro.
  • Salta and Jujuy high season goes from April to November. Winter is warm and sunny during the day and it is chilly at night. In the Puna, there is a huge temperature amplitude.
  • Some tourists experience discomfort due to the lack of oxygen since most attractions in the region are at high altitude.
