About San Martin de los Andes

San Martin de los Andes includes the city of San Martin de los Andes, Junin de los Andes, and the Chapelco ski resort. The main attractions of this area are the spectacular landscapes and the variety of activities available all year round (see Customer Reviews).

San Martin de los Andes is a town of 20,000 inhabitants, located on the shores of Lake Lacar, inside the Lanin National Park (see Map). Due to its mild climate, the town was originally a Mapuche Indian settlement located among hills to provide protection from severe snowfalls and winds.

Junin de los Andes has around 8,500 inhabitants and is 60km from San Martin de los Andes. It is the traditional starting point for tours and expeditions to the mountains and volcanoes in the surrounding area, such as Lanin volcano.

The region of San Martin de los Andes includes the Chapelco ski resort which has an excellent infrastructure and 31 slopes for beginners and advanced skiers.

San Martin de los Andes Hotels can be divided into two groups. The downtown has a large variety of hotels, inns and apart hotels while traditional cottages are located on the outskirts of the town.

San Martin de los Andes offers diverse adventure travel activities all year round, including trekking, rafting, mountain biking, skiing, hunting and fishing. Travelers can also take part in frequently held competitions.

Junin de los Andes, 60km from San Martin de los Andes, is an excellent place for trout fishing because of the numerous lakes and rivers surrounding the town. It is also the best starting point for tourists who wish to climb or trek in the region due to its proximity to the mountains and Lanin volcano.

There are various routes where tourists can enjoy the magnificent mountain landscapes with streams, lakes and native forest, such as the Seven Lakes Circuit, Hua Hum and Lakes Huechulaufquen and Paimun (see San Martin de los Andes photos).

Another option is to visit the diverse Mapuche Indian Reserves such as Curruhuinca, Knicul, Raquithue and Cayun which can be found within a 20km radius of the town of San Martin de los Andes. Tourists will be able to learn about the first inhabitants of the region – their language, customs, handicrafts and religion – an experience of a lifetime.

San Martin de los Andes Transfers and Car Rental

San Martin de los Andes Car Rental is recommended for those who wish to travel around on their own. Those who are planning to visit the region for a few days can use taxis to get around town as they are relatively cheap and also take various tours.

San Martin de los Andes airport is located in Chapelco, 8km from the town. From there you can take a transfer or taxi to get to the hotels.

Another alternative is to fly to Bariloche airport situated 260km from San Martin de los Andes and later take a transfer or bus to the town.

There are daily bus connections to the main Argentine cities, such as Buenos Aires, Bariloche, El Calafate and Mendoza.
